Case Study: One of our most tolerance-critical projects — a compressor magnet housing for commercial HVAC compressors

Using our unique filament-winding process, our engineers made housing from a continuous tow of carbon fiber for maximum hoop strength in magnetic-bearing HVAC equipment.

Our client came to us, asking for a prototype that would provide a strong yet lightweight housing for magnetic bearings while rotating at high RPMs.

This was no easy task, but our engineering team collaborated with the client to design and fabricate a magnetic-bearing HVAC housing component that performed beautifully. The finished product met all design specifications, including a 4-decimal place form tolerance for cylindricity.

  • Out of Autoclave oven curing

  • Finish coating
  • CMM inspection

Result:

This project initially began as a prototyping endeavor, but evolved into a full-production product as we collectively developed a solution to meet the ever-growing demand for energy efficient HVAC compressors.
